STT airport customs delays just got longer!
One of the reasons so many of our guests choose private transfers from Dolphin Water Taxi to all points in the BVI is because we avoid the long customs lines into the BVI and back through the US entry at Red Hook, St. Thomas. However, when guests reach the airport at St. Thomas they all must pass through yet another (CBP) clearance process that is completely beyond our control on their way home.
Extensive repairs to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection screening areas have caused long lines, additional delays and a serious headache for travelers. Although the V.I. Port Authority reports that the construction has been completed at the customs location, there are still environmental repairs that may need to be addressed at the airport. The U.S. Customs Services has been temporarily relocated from the main terminal to the commuter area for screening while the construction is underway.
That temporary area is smaller with fewer clearance stations available, which has caused longer wait times and slowed the process for guests. It is unclear when customs will return to its previous location.
Travelers are encouraged to arrive at the airport three to four hours before their flight - with the highest volume of possible delays occurring between noon at 5p.m.
Here at Dolphin Water Taxi we endeavor to get guests to the ticket counter at least two and a half hours prior to departure to factor in any unforeseen delays along the way. However, this new issue requires a little extra time and attention so we will be adding in an additional 30 minute cushion in scheduling BVI pick-ups.
We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience this may cause. We know that no one likes to sit at the airport - including the entire Dolphin Water Taxi team. Look out for another email for us once everything has returned to normal.
